The game was touted as the must-see event of the fall schedule and it didn’t disappoint. Whilst a number of changes were made at the last minute, every player adapted seamlessly.
The game started at pace with both teams trading possession as the ball was turned-over time-and-time again. Ivan Chiu, Rich Conaway and Cormac Sheridan’s synergy in the line, ensured Rogues dominance at the line-out with the majority of balls being secured and shipped to the backs via scrum-half, Stefan Sabo-Walsh, who had another solid game in this demanding position, which he’s making his own!
Rogues demonstrated solid scrummaging throughout the game and marked a debut for Will Fast, who will become a feared prop in the not-too-distant future. Numerous back-row moves exposed the Scribes’ defence constantly and only last-ditch tackling avoided Rogues scores at the beginning of both halves.
After the break, the tenure of the Scribes’ backs was evident as they continuously probed the Rogues defence, until a few well executed moves lead to a brace of tries.
The Rogues’ evolution over the summer was evident in the last 20 minutes, as the Scribes committed penalty after penalty, which was testament to the visitors’ discipline and rucking ability, although improvements can still be made.
With the visitors once again putting pressure onto the Scribes, Dan Woods, made a break down the blind side, avoided two opposing tackles, only to be stopped inches short of the try-line in what turned out to be the Rogues’ best scoring opportunity of the game.
Acknowledgments should go out to every player, especially Kin Lo who is retiring from the playing side of the Rogues, Wilf Swartz for standing-in at Full Back, Conor Walshe and Number Eight Devan Mussato. Thanks also go to Daniel Usher for running touch and the Rogues supporters who turned-out to watch the game.
